Chandelier Tips – Choosing the Perfect Pendant Lights for Your Home

Are you looking to brighten up a room in your home?

If you're after a simple, budget-friendly fix that will change the focus on the room in an instant, we've got a better idea - Install a pendant light.

Chandelier Buyers Tips:

What Is a Pendant Light?

A pendant light is a fixture that is suspended from the ceiling by a cord, chain or metal rod.  In the majority of instances, pendant lights are harnessed in one of two ways — in clusters, hung in a decorative series, or as a stand-alone light fixture that serves as the focal point of a room. Pendants come in a huge variety of sizes and vary in materials from metal to glass or concrete and plastic.

How to Choose a Pendant Light

There are endless ways to go about choosing a pendant light. A good starting point is deciding on your decor style or room. Next, decide on the shape, size and design of your pendant light, keeping in mind your theme or style of the space it will live in.

1. Identify the Style of the Room

Before deciding on a chandelier, it’s best to have a think about what theme you want the room to be. Some good questions to ask yourself include:

• What colors feature throughout the rest of the room?

• What is the style of the room? Modern minimalist? Luxe bohemian? Industrial chic?

• Are there are any other statement items, furnishings or fixtures in the room that would compete with a pendant light?

2. Decide on the Shape and Size

Choosing the wrong sized light fixture can seriously disrupt the design of a space. We recommend a happy medium between too big and too small—that way the fixture is harmonious with the scale of the space without overpowering or feeling oddly small.

A good rule of thumb to help you keep everything in proportion and to scale is that the diameter of your pendant should be about half the width of your actual island. For example, for a small island 3 feet wide, your light fixture should be about 15"-18" wide. For large kitchens with an island 4 feet wide, your pendants should be around 24" wide. Of course, this is just a guideline, there is no right or wrong answer; you can always go bigger or smaller depending on your personal preference.

3. Consider the Location and the Height of the Ceiling

After selecting the right pendant light for your room, the next step is to find out how high the light should hang. As there are many different sized rooms and varied ceiling heights, measuring a space is paramount. If your room requires overall light, space pendants evenly throughout the room. If you're having trouble ascertaining the perfect height, it's never a bad idea to speak with your local electrician to ask their professional advice.

As a general rule, larger lights can be hung higher while smaller lights can be hung lower within a space.
For more specific lighting:

• Pendants used as task lighting above areas such as kitchen sinks should be hung approximately 1.8m from the floor.

• Pendants above dining tables should be hung between 1.5 and 1.7m from the floor, allowing for unobstructed conversations between diners.

• Pendants within a room of a 2.4m ceiling height should be hung about 1.9 – 2.1m from the floor.

• There is also the option of selecting pendants with retractable cords which are easily adjustable to suit different tasks.
